(Please ask us how you may be able to help us
with this exciting project)
The
Livonia Junior High School will be adopting the Bulati School in
Tanzania Africa. The school population is approximately 520
students, from first grade to seventh grade. There are 9 teachers and
the school
year is 10 months of the year. The students have their holiday breaks
in June and in December. The school currently has 7 classrooms, and
four teacher houses. There is a need for more classrooms, a dining
hall, kitchen, library, and a water tank (water is very scarce in this
area. Students often have to carry their own water to school). That
is the "big picture". On a smaller scale, the students need paper,
pencils, colored pencils, pencil sharpeners, composition notebooks,
markers, glue sticks, rulers, stickers, etc. In addition, soccer
balls,
footballs, volleyballs, nets, and jerseys would all be appreciated.
Our hope is that the students at Livonia Junior High will help to
collect the needed school supplies and gently used sports equipment. We
would like to write to the children of the Bulati school and send maps
and pictures of where we live. As we share cultures across the world,
we hope to gain a greater understanding of how schools in far away
places operate. And become more appreciative of what "riches" we have
here in the United States.
In March of 2008, one of the teachers from Livonia will be
travelling with Pack Paddle and Ski to Tanzania to climb Mt.
Kilimanjaro
and to visit the school that the students have been communicating with.
She will deliver the supplies that have been collected and will meet
the
teachers and students. We hope that this "sisterhood" between the
two schools will continue
to build and grow. Since the supplies are consumable, the need for
school supplies will continue year after year. It is hoped that
Livonia
and other schools in the area can help fill this need.
October, 2007 Bulati School Project Update
Much progress is being made on the
Bulati Project . First, we are forming a
501c3 not for profit corporation to enable us to work with corporations and
asset managers for support for the
construction projects.
The picture and drawings now
appearing on he web site provide a brief look at the school and some of the
students. These were taken in July 2007
and sent to Linda Artruc’s students at Livonia Jr. High.
Donations of school supplies have
been coming in and logged by Linda’s students into an inventory control
system. Soon we will be purchasing
missing supplies and packaging them for transport. Some of the Kili climbers will make this
delivery in person in early 2008.
Contributions continue to come in to
the Bulati Fund as our supporters spread the word. These include a memorial gift, the sharing of
a job performance bonus and a birthday gift – a great idea for that person who
has everything!
