 Rick and Theresa
On
July 10th, 2006 we started the first leg of a journey that would lead
us to the Mountain. Shortly after Rick was diagnosed with Esophageal
Cancer, he was wheeled into the Strong Memorial Hospital surgical unit.
The surgery and the four chemo treatments would leave him with a new
appreciation for the gift of Life.
Since that time Rick has made it
a point to pay it forward to others. He offers guidance and support to
those who are experiencing the same cancer. This trip will be
another way for him to give back. In 2006 we fought the fight against
Rick's cancer and in 2009 we will continue to fight, together, for
others by trekking up Mount Kilimanjaro. |

Physical challenges are our favorite way to experience new places, in our beloved Adirondacks and around the world. Marty and I have climbed in the High Peaks, hiked the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, climbed Mount Kinabalu
on Borneo, and were eager for more adventure. When we attended the ADK
lecture in 2005, and Rick French introduced Tanzanian guide Yusuph, our
ears perked up at the possibility of Killimanjaro. Could we do it?
Then I read about Journeys of Inspiration on the Pack, Paddle, Ski
website, and thought immediately of four dear friends we lost to
cancer, and at least four more survivors. How wonderful it would be to
honor them all with this personal challenge. We are in our early 70's.
What better model for our seven grandchildren than a vigorous,
adventurous grandma and grandpa. It will be a challenge indeed! |

Of ALL the many great pictures from KILI last year I choose this one for
several reasons. The climb up and down KILIMANJARO was even more wonderful
than I had expected. The safari filled me with memories to last a lifetime.
The training hikes leading up to the trip brought me closer to friends and
family I shared the trip with, for which I will ALWAYS be thankful.
However, the people in AFRICA and the experience of this country as a whole,
touch one's soul!
On behalf of The American Cancer Society THANK YOU for YOUR interest in this
grand adventure! |
