Genesee Riverway Trail
Written by Jim Thies
River gorge, water falls, scenic views, wildlife, no this isn't in a far away place but right here in Rochester. This week I took time to scout out the newly completed northern section of the Genesee Riverway Trail. Even though this is a true "urban" trail, I came away very pleased. I started at the end of the Charlotte pier but technically it starts just about under the new ORourke bridge in Charlotte. The trail passed low along the river, up high near Lake Ave. and again down low near lower falls. There is a very long boardwalk section near Turning Point Park that is especially interesting and almost a 'remote' feeling. I stopped a little south of Driving Park bridge (near an interesting sculpture called 'forgetting and remembering'. Good place to sit and reflect. The trail passes near restrooms for those in need of a pit stop and also there is opportunity to get a snack (think Abbott's Ice Cream!). I realize this type of urban trail is not what most of use typically look for, but if you are in the area go ahead and check it out. My trip (one way) was about 6 miles.
