Sharing my excitement of a week-end hiking adventure
Written by Bonnie Zechmann

What great opportunities we may run into as a result of our commitment to our Kili climb!  My goal is to make sure I recognize them and take advantage of every single one.  One such opportunity for me was this week-end.  Although I did miss a chance to spend some time with my fellow climbers at a paddle dinner, I seized the chance of spending a week-end with my daughter, who lives in North Carolina, hiking some of the Northern Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia.  You know it’s going to be a good hike when there is sign posted on the road going to your trail head telling you to go no further unless you have a four-wheel drive vehicle!  Well, after driving through two streams, backing up a number of times to find a safe spot for another car to pass, and holding our breath more times than we could count, we made it safely to the start of a fabulous trail.  We were at the top of Crab Tree Falls and proceeded to walk the trail going down the falls.  We followed the various drop of the falls, thus some wonderful beauty for our eyes, all the way down to the bottom.  It was about three miles down with just stunning water falls.  For lunch, we found a way to cut through the woods, cross some stones and grab just the right rock facing one of those beautiful falls!  The Mountain Laurel and Rhododendron filled the woods with their pink and white splendor.  Yes, what goes down must go back up!  The trip back up the falls somehow seemed a bit longer, but not any less spectacular.  We went on other hikes over the week-end, as well; but this was the most spectacular!  I’d love to hear about anyone else’s great walks.
